Dry fire training is the most cost-effective means of developing the foundational skills of shooting. You can effectively develop an understanding of what you need to do with your hands, eyes, and feet to get your sights where they need to be as efficiently as possible.
So what is it, and what do you absolutely need to get started? Dry Fire is going through all of the fundamentals of shooting: grip, sights, trigger, etc., without any live ammunition. DO NOT WET FIRE IN YOUR HOME OR ANYWHERE ELSE THAT IS DEEMED SOCIALLY UNACCEPTABLE. This can be done at home with limited space, at a bare minimum you will need your firearm and something to put your sights on.
While you may not need much to start training, there are definitely some things that will make your training more productive. I recommend having the following:
Scaled Targets
Timer or similar app
Holster and Mag Pouches
Weighted Dummy Rounds
A Clear Objective
I will write more articles covering how to effectively use the above tools at a later time. For now lets talk about the last thing on that list. Having a clear objective, not only for your training sessions but for yourself and where you want to be as a shooter, is absolutely critical if you want to progress. Is this just a hobby? Are you training with your EDC? Do you want to be the best at your local matches? Are you gunning for it all and trying to take home the overall at the regional/national level?
Once you have that figured out you can then answer the question "How often should I dry fire?" the answer to that is entirely dependent on what your objectives are as a shooter, there is no-one-size-fits-all answer. I personally try to dry fire every day for at least 10-15 minutes on work days and 20-30 minutes on off days.
If you've made it this far, thank you. I appreciate your time and it's time for you to start training, if you're brand new I'd recommend you start here: "What to Do With Your Hands" If you've got an idea of where to put your hands go here: "Trigger Control at Speed"
I hope this helps. Have a good one.
